The NFPA's Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) designation exists to document expertise and provide professional recognition to those active in fire protection, fire safety, and fire prevention. CFPS and NFPA joined forces in 1998 to offer this highly respected certification program jointly.

The CFPS test is designed to assess the competency of applicants pursuing the Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) certification. The NFPA Fire Protection Handbook, 20th edition, is the current basis for the examination.

Eligibility for CFPS:

  • High school diploma + six years of proven job experience dedicated to reducing physical and financial fire loss.
  • A bachelor's degree in engineering, technology, or another relevant area from an authorized college or university, plus four years of verifiable professional experience committed to reducing physical and financial fire loss.
